As my boat is drifting through the papyrus reeds, a pair of eyes meet mine through the thick vegetation. Standing there knee deep in swamp water is a sitatunga: an extremely shy aquatic antelope with splayed hooves that help it navigate the marshlands it calls home. This is a rare sighting, for in over 5 years of visiting Botswana this is the first time I’ve ever seen one.

Despite being over 90% desert savanna, Botswana is home to one of the most diverse aquatic ecosystems in the world: the Okavango Delta, where the Okavango River empties into the Kalahari Desert. In this unusual habitat, everyone becomes a swimmer - even painted dogs and big cats.

Botswana is bordered by Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia; national parks and game reserves make up 17% of its total land area. Virtually every nature documentary that features Africa includes footage from this landlocked country that is teeming with wildlife. The world’s largest elephant population, around 130,000 individuals, reside in here, roaming the banks of the Chobe river and bathing in the Delta.

Khwai Community Concession sits on the edge of the Delta and is home to a high density population of leopards and lions. What makes this park particularly unique is that is was formerly a hunting concession, transformed into a photographic concession now owned by the community of neighboring Khwai Village.
